Both Kino and Hinata were astoundingly headstrong and stubborn kids—Kino was absolutely resolute and steadfast in denying that they had done anything wrong in denying him his offer to go act as live bait for whatever was hunting them, and he was just the same in standing by that offer, standing by wanting to help.
Kino understood wanting to help. The traveler usually felt it in each country they visited—a specter of long past, a kid who would flag down a stranger no one else trusted so she could offer him a room in her parents' inn. But that sort of magnanimity had to be reigned in; Master had taught Kino that. A traveler was never a savior; they simply passed through.
This nature stood at odds to Kino here, someone standing between helping the recruits they found a good deal of kinship in and doing what they were called to do to bring about widespread destruction. Kino could never say which one felt stranger. Offering help should feel better morally, but... things rarely seemed to work out that way either.
It was that, along with plenty of apprehension about this ominous training, which had the traveler lingering in the hall outside the Black Box training rooms. Several had already come and go—offering the kid odd glances and perhaps a passing hello. Kino always reacted politely, but a moment's silence would cause them to regress to a sort of cryptic silence, face marked with tired eyes and a mouth set into a slight frown.
They knew (from previous observation) that he had gone inside. It was simply a matter of waiting. That was fine. Kino was patient.]
