[he replies only once he's reached his room, slightly winded and with a whole lot of glancing about. on realizing she wasn't there and that she hadn't even planned to--]
[he gets bold without thought, as he tends to.]

FROM: hinata.shouyou@cdc.org I mean if you were planning to you should, but you don't have to if you weren't planning to, obviously!!!
[ She doesn't know why she'd thought attempting a conversation with Hinata would go smoothly. He'd gotten all worked up about something so insignificant... but it can't be helped at this point, and true to her word she heads over to his room, eyes wandering over the number of each room until she's standing in front of the right one.
Once there, she knocks, waiting quietly for him to answer. And also, there's a whole chicken in one of her hands. ]
um wow totally mikasa's fault (A WHOLE CHICKEN FFF)
[ If there is anything awry about his state, she ignores it, right along with his quiet little statement. ]
You don't need an oven. [ Just an open fire would do, though she's not sure if they're allowed to start fires.
Or he could use a pot or pan. There are many ways to cook a chicken, and she holds the chicken out to him. It's a little damp from having been kept in the fridge of their kitchenette's fridge. ]
It's yours.
ohhh my god this is killing me spoon you've killed me dead
[he doesn't move from the doorway, doesn't hold out his hands to receive it. glances down at the-- the whole chicken. all of that was his? that was... a massive amount of food. and for him? from Mikasa? was something wrong with it? no, she wouldn't have given it to him if something was wrong. so then it was... something good. okay. was it his birthday? wait, how would she know when he didn't, and why would she be the one to bring him something? were they friends?]
[he opens his mouth, feels a stupid question tie up his tongue, shuts his mouth.]
[opens his mouth again, this time to blurt:]
Thanks. [a whole chicken. had Mikasa caught it herself...] Thanks a lot, I mean. Uh.
[ It's really weird to her that this is stranger to him than randomly approaching her to play some kind of game. Sharing food between people is much more socially acceptable, as far as she's concerned. And much more conducive to survival. Though perhaps meat is a rare treat where he comes from as well? So much so that it's thrown him into shock to have it so readily given to him.
Yes. That makes sense.
She shoves the chicken further toward his chest for him to take it. This is why she'd rather have just dropped it off while he was out. ]
[the protest breaks out before he can catch it, blurted as he finally takes the (whole) chicken in hand, gaze briefly flitting down in bewilderment at its weight. meat wasn't rare at home, but it'd became something of a delicacy within the last two months; with the rice he'd just bought, the extremely normal meal seemed like a godsend.]
[but, right. he'd been protesting.]
-- It's a really big chicken, so - [no pausing! no hesitation! ehh, he couldn't avoid a compulsive swallow.] - We could share it?
[with big eyes peering up at her, voice genuine. almost like an afterthought, pause miniscule:]
[her hesitation isn't outright rejection, and his mother would've smacked him over the head if he let her leave without something to show for the gesture. even besides obligation, though, he-- okay, so it was out of blue and still highly confusing, but it wasn't as if he were ever eager to get away from her.]
[as the chicken proved, she had a heart. he'd seen it on the beach.]
You've got that right. Even if we both had some right now, it'd last a while...
[trying for suavely casual, ending up a little too "cool" and thus a mite awkward. he made up for it by adding a very forward demand (which was much more his style, anyway).]
[ Which is actually the truth, and not just something that she's saying to flee the situation. She can understand well enough that he's trying to be polite, but she's not interested in wasting energy on manners. It's awkward enough to end up consuming the food that's meant for him herself.
Hinata is interesting though, that he can so brazenly step forward without fear of rejection. They're rather alike in that respect, she supposes.
She casts him a careful glance, content nonetheless. ] It's fine. I'll see you later.

have to remember sometimes ok ok nbd you're still a friend
If you're sure. [not so much a final protest as a final confirmation, because--- he'd bet the chicken in his arms that an assured Mikasa was as hard to move as a mountain, and, anyway... the gesture finally began its intended effect.
[he smiles, small but honest, the awkwardness melting away in the introduction of a warm, oddly fluffy feeling.]
But okay. Thanks again - and see you!
[true to his nature, what he felt shown as clear as day in everything he did. he turned with a new bounce in his step, expression happy, though he'd still make sure she really had left before shutting the door.]

Hi, Mikasa. Er... Sorry. I bought a kettle, but I don't really have an oven you could borrow...
