[the sentences' sentiment appeared extremely straight-forward, and yet all they inspired was pure puzzlement. a second read-through, two minutes to turn over the words, and the dots still didn't connect. a comprehensible "lesson" in the broader sense, though why would he need to hold a debt over a friend--?]
